I am considering putting an $8,000 purchase on my credit card. I have never made a purchase that large on my card. It is only about half of my credit limit. My question is does the credit card company require me to call and tell them I am making a purchase this big or will the charge just go through? I don%26#039;t want to look like an idiot if my card gets turned down.
Do credit cards require pre-authorization for large purchases?
Yes it will raise a %26quot;red flag%26quot; at the credit card issuer - it is best to contact your credit card company and let them know that you are planning a purchase of this amount. With credit card fraud and abuse occurring these days, most card carriers will question the amount.....

its best to get preapproved, though some cards will let it go through then call you to confirm the unusual activity

8,000 bucks ? They probably will. Just to make sure the card
isn%26#039;t stolen.

A friend had his credit card company refuse to authorize a large charge because it was totally unlike anything they%26#039;d ever done - assumed someone was using the card illegally.
We called Discover to see if we could tell them before we made a large, unexpected purchase and the operator said they do not make a note of it.
I suggest you call your card company and ask them.
If your card is turned down, you may be able to call from the store to clear this up.

Some credit cards have a daily spending limit in addition to the credit limit you can carry on your card.
Discover has called us to check on a purchase we had already made and years ago Visa called us because purchases were showing up in Indiana and California at the same time. Our number had been stolen.
It appears it all depends on the card company.
When we renewed our driver%26#039;s licenses, they ran the our Discover card before they found out the state won%26#039;t take it.
Then we tried a Master Card. It came back that we had only $85 dollars left before we hit our limit. I was afraid to use our debit card even though there was money in the bank and wrote a check instead. I called Master Card and was told nobody had tried to run a DMV charge on our card and we had no charges at all for that month. I don%26#039;t know what happened. At that time it didn%26#039;t occur to me to call them from the DMV. I can imagine the charge on our cell phone for an out of area call that puts you on hold. LOL
