i got a debit card when i was 15 since i was a college student. now that i will be moving out soon, i want to get a credit card to build up my credit. i know that most credit card companies require you to be at least 18, but since i was able to get a debit card, i figured i could get a credit card as well.

I%26#039;m not sure where you are based, but in the UK you legally cannot take on debt of any sort until you%26#039;re 18 - that%26#039;s why your current (cheque/check) account can%26#039;t give you an overdraft. It%26#039;s not long to wait, and anyway it%26#039;s better not to get into debt too early. Yes, the more debt you take (and pay back fully without defaults) the better you look. But equally if you take out a loan on your 18th birthday it could be read that you had illegal loans you had to pay off quick-sharpish!
