College student credit cards...how many?

Hey everyone,

I%26#039;m a college student whose had a citi mtvU card for close to a year. I pay in full each month and am never late. I was considering getting a second card to further build credit (thinking about Amex Blue for Students). Will a second card hurt my credit rating, since it would be a second credit inquiry on my record? Is it too much, even though I am very responsible with my money? If I do get a second card (which would be my last for a while), is the Amex a good choice?

I%26#039;m kinda new to the whole credit realm, so I appreciate any thoughts or advice.

I agree. creditors dont see how many credit cards you have just your score. and the amex must be paid in full every month because i have one. so if by chance you cant pay there is no minimum and you credit will start to go down. if you feel you want a better card to build you credit get a new one and close your current one. but they also look for stability so id say keep up the good work on your current card. dont build yourself into debt. you seem very responsible and it will pay off in the long run.

Don%26#039;t get a second one. You don%26#039;t need a second one. One is enough. In fact one is too many for a college student if you ask me.

Stay away from the second card. Trust me. You%26#039;re building your credit just fine right now. A second one won%26#039;t just boost your score up. Keep paying on time.

having a second is ok, since you are good with it...the whole key is to not go above about one third of the available credit. If you are paying utility and other bills that will also help. I really resent the way the industry targets kids in school and I am thrilled to see someone not getting in over their head. you have the whole thing just fine. be on time, stay out of debt and use it wisely. very good luck to you.

Since you%26#039;ve had the first card for over a year, the inquiry for a second card shouldn%26#039;t hurt your score.

The most important thing to remember is to only charge what you can afford to pay in full and on time each month.

By the way, the person who said creditors only see your score is absolutely WRONG. Creditors look at your whole credit report and make decisions based on what is there. Your score is only a small part of the credit decision.
