If I go to a retail store and apply for a credit card, for instant approval they usually need another one of your credit cards to check it. Can you use a debit card for this purpose if it has a visa logo on it?

The more open accounts you have (over maybe 1-3), the more of a credit risk you will look like and the worse your credit score will be. Best to stick with a couple of credit cards that have general rewards (points, flyer miles, etc.) rather than get a ton of retail credit cards that could wind up pushing your interest rates up.
